We want to thank everyone that came out and raced not only this past weekend in awesome conditions, but all season long at the Boss Cross races. Jeremy and I have a ton of fun putting these events on and keeping the local cross scene strong. We have a lot of great things planned for next year to continue to make the Boss Cross series the best in town.

Boss Cross Finals/MO State CX Championships - December 3 and 4

Greetings,I'll be posting flyers in a couple days for the weekend of racing, but I wanted to take a couple of minutes to communicate with you all. Listen up. First, Boss Cross finals will be on Saturday, using the normal BC categories and times. Anyone who's been to a Boss Cross races knows the score... Last year, we kind of screwed up (not a lot, but a bit) by trying to meld Boss Cross with MO State CX racing. As I said before, a couple people got hosed out of series victories and starting position due to the clumsy category sequences... So, this year, we solved it with two race days. As everyone knows, SBO folded, and we have decided to not pursue online registration. Frankly, we don't see the value in it. Our fields are not huge, it costs money, and you guys still have to wait in line. The only tangible benefit that can be identified is call up advantage. We will work out a decent callup procedure and will present it before race day. Likely it will simply be the results from last year on the front row and a cattle call for the remainder. Lemme know what you think. The races will be held at Raytown BMX, the same place as Boss Cross #3. It's bitchin. There are hotels nearby on Noland Road (to the east, about 15 minutes), and on 350 highway, about 10 minutes west of the venue. I'll post maps this weekend, but check previous posts for directions and use google. The course will change slightly from BC #3. Joe's got some ideas about how to incorporate more pavement and mix things up a bit. But, the track will be part of the course if it's dry. Work on riding it. As people who raced on Halloween weekend, they know the course is deceptively hard. You need some power, skill, and balls to ride it well. Something for everyone... See you soon.

I won't lie to you. The course is awesome. It's flat, so some of you think you will ride away from everyone... not so fast. While the course is fast, it's also hard. There are a couple places where you will need both skill and balls to ride your bike. Bring both. also bring your fast legs.... Most of the course is smooth and nice. But there are some bumpy sections, which you can thank the lack of rain for. As a promoter, I like the lack of rain. It's easier to look a land manager in the eye when you haven't had 200 maniacs riding through mud for 5 hours on his grass. The good thing about the bumpy sections is at least they are not in the windy sections of the course.... Thank the warm weather for the wind.... We need to thank the folks who take care of Raytown BMX for allowing us to race here. This is a place where we can have a lot of fun. Hopefully we can bring some juniors into the sport. BMX kids are naturals at cyclocross. Ask Sven Nys about it. But we also need to remember that we are guests here. When we were setting the course up today, there were several dads patching holes in the course while their kids either helped or dicked around. These guys are supporting bike racing because of love for their kids. We do it for fun for mostly adults. This puts things into perspective a bit. The course/track is located on School District property where there is a no-alcohol policy. We need to make sure there is no PUBLIC alcohol consumption, and I don't want to see any bottles/cans in the trashcans while we're picking up after you guys. Like I said, these guys are busting their asses for their kids. Let's not jeaopardize that...Joe is going to put up points later tonight. We have received the leaders jerseys from Verge, as you saw last year, they are freaking awesome. So, callups: Series leader then pre-registered, then points contenders, then everyone else. See you tomorrow. Hard and fast is the name of the game...

Looking forward to racing at an exciting new venue! Course will be fast yet challenging, with concessions, four cross starting in the afternoon, and bmx racing in the evening!

All, We've learned as of yesterday that Sportsbaseonline.com is going out of business. This means that you should not pre-register for any future races as we won't get your entry fee or any support from SBO for importing your information into our registry. If you've already pre-registered, no worries - you can race as normal. I'm working with SBO to get all the information for current pre-registrants into a workable system. For the remainder of the season, registration will be day of race only. We hope everyone is as excited to race cross this weekend as we are! Barry Platte Park has become a quickly become a classic northland venue with plenty of varied terrain with some fast sections and some tough sand runs.
Directions: 1-69 North to Barry Rd. Left (west) on Barry Rd (.5 miles). Right (North) on Platte Purchase Rd, Left (West) on 87th St. Park at Barry School and use sidewalk to connect to Barry Platte Park.
We will be setting up tomorrow afternoon, so if you want to come check out the course stop in around 4:00 or so, and the course will be about set up.

Two of our previous venues, English Landing Park and EH Young Park (home of last year's state championship) were flooded and severerly damaged this year. This has caused a scramble on our end to secure some more venues. We've got a couple up our sleeves for later in the season, but this weekend we'll be racing hard at Barry Platte Park! See you there!

Hello all for 2011- Sorry for the lack of news. As you have probably figured, the flooding of 2011 dealt Boss Cross a harsh blow. 2 prized venues have spent the spring and summer underwater. The upside is that we have lots of new, natural sand. The downside is that we don't get to race in these parks this year. That's cool. We've been complacent, and it's forced use to find new venues, which is why we've been neglecting an update...Good news for 2011 - Boss Cross is going to do two weekends. We noticed a dearth of weekend racing this year, so we're filling the void. Kansas City Cross is huge, and we think we need to be racing Saturday and Sunday whenever possible. Second good news for 2011 - We are going to be rolling out a new park (to be named later...) in Kansas City North as a new venue for State CX Champs and Boss Cross 4. Which brings us to...Good News #3 - We (I - Jeremy) screwed up last year. I hosed Andy Lucas out of the Overall victory because we squeezed BC categories into MO State CX categories. Not that Dave H isn't a worthy winner, he's fast, a cool dude, and definitely deserved his win; however, I deprived both Dave and Andy the chance to dice it up and throw down for the V... Not this year. Boss Cross 4 and MO State CX Champs Results

Man, oh, man... it was COLD yesterday! Many thanks to everyone who has antifreeze in their veins and honched it up out there. I want to especially thank all of the out of towners who came and raced. Lots of fast people...

Not only did the out of towners show us KC racers a clean set of wheels in most of the races, they also showed us how to visit a new scene and retain their dignity. One of our goals in hosting the MO CX Champs was to promote the best that KC racing had to offer. Racers, venues, spectators... I think most of this can be considered mission accomplished. However, a few of us left our manners at the soccer stadium. It's cool to have a rivalry and local pride and all that, but we should always... ALWAYS(!) be gracious hosts. I think that STL won the competition on that front. KC, let's do a better job next year. Save the hooligan shit for when Kevin Hartman comes back to town...

Now that I'm done with that, I want to congratulate all of the newly crowned state champs. Well done. But I do have a bit of warmth in my heart for the local guys who were able to bring a jersey home. Well done.

Here are the results for the day. Joe will calculate overall series points soon. The Bubba Cross guys will do what they will for the double points on their side of the state. There were a couple of rough patches trying to mix categories for USAC and Boss Cross. We will work on that for next year. Any constructive criticism is well received.

I hope everyone is as excited for this Saturdays MO state champs as Jeremy and I are.

It's going to be a fast, yet very challenging course as many of you already know from early October. Series points will be posted by the time you are reading this, so that those of you who have been consistently racing the BC races this season will know exactly where you stand going into Saturday's race.

Also, for any of you out of towners needing a place to stay Friday night, let me know. I have room for 2-3 of you at my house. Keep in mind that getting up bright and early Saturday morning to head to the race (and so will you), but if you want a free bed to sleep in you are welcome to it (cycleciytkc@yahoo.com).

SportsBaseOnline has updated the registration menu to allow people who want to register for their age group category for the MO State Champs races. Registering like this will also allow you to be properly entered in the correct Boss Cross Age Group (i.e., you register for the 40-44 Champ category and you're racing in the 40+ Boss Cross race and eligible for those prizes). This should only affect a few of you. If you're a MO resident, and you're here to race for a championship, register using your age group category. If you're not a MO resident and are going to pre-reg, then use the BC category. Got it? Cool? Thanks!

Dudes,

A few vocal people have identified some inconsistencies in our callup procedures which apparently favor people who live in the KC area. This isn't really true, but there was a bit of unintended bias toward people who race the Boss Cross Series, regardless of their residence. Shame on you STL for thinking that only KC area riders race this series! Just kidding. But really, good ideas were presented regarding our original flawed callup procedure, so now it's been changed. See the updated post below for the details...

Also, we are moving the women's open race to 10:00 am in order to accommodate for larger fields that we are anticipating. A revised flyer is posted below.

If you are traveling from out of town and need a place to stay, the race venue is located to our local den of iniquity, the Argosy Casino and Hotel. I've stayed there on a couple of occasions. The rooms are great. If falling asleep to the lullabye of slot machines isn't your thing, there is a Super 8 hotel (800 Nw Argosy Parkway, Riverside(816) 505-2888) across the street from the Argosy. There are several hotels located 10 minutes away in North Kansas City, just to the southeast. As I am not aware of how many of you out-of-towners to expect, i have not contacted the hotel to save a block of rooms or anything. If someone would like to take ownership of this task, let me know and we can do something like this. We will definitely consider it for next year depending on the response. The hotels, like I said are directly adjacent to the race course. Not only is the venue there, there is a cool gravel levee trail that you can take for a ride. It's a good spot.

We will not be setting up the course until 2:00pm on FRIDAY 12/3. This is at the request of the City of Riverside. We would ask that any pre-riders do not ride while we're setting up the course. this is like someone coming over to skate the 8 feet wide section of the new miniramp that just got masonite put on that afternoon... I understand that some of you out-of-towners need to check out the course before race day. We are using 90% of the course from the season opener of Boss Cross 2010, and there should be remnants of the course visible on the grass. Also, I will be out there most of the day trying to figure out a way to make the setup process more efficient. Which means that I can give some guys a tour of the course before we start staking and taping. Anyway, that's the deal. Missouri State Cyclocross Championships - Flyer and Info

I have to preface this post, as I do most of my screeds, by apologizing to you racers for taking so long to present to you the flyer and information for the 2010 MO State CX Championships. As most of you know, I travel a lot for work, and I just completed a 6 week stay in Northern Michigan. I came home a couple of times to put on Boss Cross 3 and visit the fam, but mostly while I was away, I was pretty isolated from the rest of the world living in a cabin 20 miles from any town... So, I didn't get this information posted, and I received more than a couple desperate emails from people who aren't familiar with my ineptitude and lax manner of taking care of business requesting details regarding callups, classes, and all that stuff. In response to these guys, and the silent majority, we'll get to that.

First, I would like to say how excited that Joe and I are to be hosting the MO State Champs. It's been a goal of mine since I started promoting cross races in the 90s to bring the state champs to KC. I never got around to it, and others did it first, and probably better, but I'm still stoked.

The venue is bitchin. EH Young Park in Riverside. Boss Cross 1 & 2 were there in October. Anyone who showed up knows how badass the park is and how good the course was. Most said it was harder than it looks at first glance. We are using the course from BC#1 with some modifications. We will be changing the starting area and a couple of other minor features, but you get the idea.... Our sponsors have come through with some great prizes, we have John Lefler providing PRO race calling and announcer services, probably a DJ or two pumping out the tunes, and chili/pasta that Joe and Kathy do so well. Roger will be there cranking out the super enthusiasm and pictures. I'll be there drinking beer provided by Boulevard Brewery.

Procedures:

There's been alot of constructive criticism regarding our original callup plan. That's good. There have been some accusation about our west-side bias.... This is wrong. As much as I want our KC guys to keep the jerseys on our side of the state, there was no inherent stacking of the deck to forward that advancement. The original design was borne of one thing. Not only is this race the State Champs, it is the Boss Cross Series Final. That means, that not only bragging rights and a sweet jersey are up for grabs, but cash, prizes, and a sweet jersey are up for grabs. My intention was to make it fair for participants in both races (the meta race?) to be competitive. This maybe wasn't the best way to do it. No big deal. We're flexible and want to look fair, as much as we can... So, here's what we've come up with to be as unbiased and efficient, while still getting people lined up where they need to be. Also, in order to extend our hand across the state, we heard that this race is also doubling as a double points race for the Bubba Cross Series in STL. Cool. So in order to kick you State Champ contenders in the nuts just a bit more, we will be lining up the Bubba Cross points leader in the front as well. So... without further explanation here is the revised callup procedures:

FIRST ROW: Defending State Champs, 2010 Boss Cross and Bubba Cross points leaders, Pre-registrants by order of registration at www.sportsbaseonline.com.

SECOND ROW: Preregistrants and everyone else. This should be amenable to everyone.

Scoring/Champs:

As you probably know, only MO residents are eligible for the MO State Championships medals and jerseys. In addition to the champs, 12/4 is also the Boss Cross series finale, which will be run concurrently with the champ races. We have added a 30-34 and 35-39 mens race at 10:00 in order to accommodate all of the USAC championship categories. Prizes for this race will only be medals and State Champ Jersey. Also running as a Championship-eligible race is men and women singlespeed, which will entail the Boss Cross-standard prize list as well as State Champ jersey/medals.

Additional clarifications:

*One day license holders are not eligible for state jersey/medal.
*No medals awarded in Men 4 40+ race
*Women Open race is championship race for Women 1/2/3. Women Open will race at 10:00am instead of their normal 11:00am time.
*Men Open race is championship race for Men 1/2

And as far as anyone who's used to racing w/A,B,C categories, it's up to you to figure out where you fit in.

Boss Cross 3 Results and Wrap-Up

Ladies and Gents,

Thanks for making the 3rd round of Boss Cross so badass! The racing was great... tons of strong efforts, displays of amazing cycling skills, and lots of crashes! Several of you said that the course was harder than you expected. Awesome. Here at Boss Cross, we try to challenge each and every one of you racers to learn something new during the race. I think that this last weekend showed that even some of the most subtle features can make a race... and some apparently intimidating features aren't so bad. And sometimes going fast through a section is not the best way...

Anyway, we learned something this last weekend also... Bike racers use the toilet a lot!! We've got to apologize for the appalling crapper situation. That was lame for us to not think of getting another port-a-john out there. Next time we will. Promise.

Now, back to you racers. Again, the racing was awesome. We saw a change in the Verge Boss Cross Race Leader's jersey in at least one race, and in others retaining the jersey was a hard-fought battle. Thanks for doing Boss Cross and Verge so proud in your efforts to get that leader's jersey! Not only was the action on the course good, the party was bitchin as well. Boulevard totally came through with a keg of the BRAND NEW Amber Ale, which went down pretty well judging from the lightness of the keg during loading back into my truck.

We're dialing in our calendar for 2011 as we speak, but for the most part, you will find Boss Cross during the same weekends you've seen us in the past and in this year. Start planning now.

BC3 is this Saturday October 30th. Racing starts at 11:00 at Barry Platte Park in KCMO.
Barry Platte Park is nestled into a quaint little neighborhood off of Barry Rd and Platte Purchase Road (just west of 169). The park sits between Old Stagecoach Rd and Marston Rd. However, we will be parking at Barry Middle School (2001 NW 87th Terrace, Kansas City, MO 64154). There is a sidewalk that cuts through on the south side of the school to the park. Please be respectful of the quiet neighborhood and use the parking lot for parking, not along the road.
I'll have series points posted this week, so everyone knows where they stand going into Saturday's race. Race leaders: you better wear those jerseys with pride, and bring your fast legs! The others will be gunning for you!

All - for some reason, E.H. Young Park in Riverside MO is not showing up in Google Maps and y'all can't get directions. No worries. Here's a map:

Now... the course. It's going to be tough, kids. Not balls in yer throat like you're climbing the Angliru like Manion's last week, which was an awesome race by the way. But, this race is for the strong men. Or the rider who is good at running and transitional racing. It's pretty flat, yeah. There's lots of pavement, yeah. But, there's sand (twice), fast barriers (start practicing more!) where I think the race could be won, really, and there's some nasty hills (two or three). The hard men can tear it up on the wide open flats, but the guys who can ride sideways, corner well, and get on and off the bike fast can likely have an advantage... I don't know, but that's what I'm thinking. See you Saturday! and Sunday!

All,

First, let's get it out of the way, KC Cup is an awesome race. I'm stoked that it's the event that kicks off the season. The Series 60 and Team 360 go over the top to make sure we racers have a bitchin time. Yeah, the last two years, my race has been super crappy - I think 5 rolled tires between the two. Oh well, I guess I need to work on my bikes more often. The course is super cool, I love the single track... Several Belgian Superprestige races have single track/woods sections where the course designers put pads around trees that are in the middle of the course. Think about that for a second. Anway, the cross season is officially here. Awesome. I'm looking forward to Manion's.

NEXT, We will not be racing at English Landing in October. Parkville RiverFest is that weekend and the throngs of people in E.L. Park will be in our way. Soooo, we are moving the freakshow to E.H. Young Park in Riverside, MO. You know the place, De Stad used to put on great races there. Hopefully we can meet or exceed their high bar of excellence. E.H. Young is a great place, it's hillier (even if it's by just a bit), so we'll get some variation that we didn't get at Parkville. But, don't be alarmed, if it's up to us, we will be returning to Parkville later this year, or in 2011.... It's mandatory.

Other news re: the races will be posted later this week. Let's just say that we've got some great prizes lined up. Super sponsors this year who have really went out of their way to make our series, and your season successful!

Boss Cross 2010 - SCHEDULE AND UPDATES

Dudes! It's been a while since we've communicated and now that it's almost cross season (getting those intervals in??) we feel it's time to let you in on the goings on at Boss Cross. First we've got tons of new sponsors that we'll be presenting in the next few days, and tons of new swag to give out at the races... But most importantly, here are the dates and venues for KC's longest running cyclocross series!

Note that we are modifying our categories and start times to be more aligned with the rest of the local calendar so that way you always know when you race.... this is a good idea for everyone. It allows racers to avoid modifying their race day schedule and allows bigger fields for everybody's enjoyment.

BC 4 and Final Series Standing

I want to start out with a great big THANK YOU to everyone who made this season a great success!!! We had 4 absolutely great races, thanks mostly in part to you, the racers! It's been great to see the feedback and responses we have received after each race as we continue to impress new and seasoned racers with our courses. We may not have a flashy podium ceremony, but you are guaranteed to feel welcome at every Boss Cross event, and you are guaranteed to race on the best course out there.
2010 will promise to be an even better year. Once again we will have 4 killer races, bigger and better prize lists, and more fun than one should be allowed to have.
The series points have been tallied and results are in (thanks to microsoft excel). There were some really close battles for the title, and Saturday's race was the deciding factor in several categories. Remember, as our sport continues to grow, and as each of you continue to improve, it is your duty as a racer to race your respective category and strive to improve. If you won your category series in 2009, you can guarantee that you will not be starting a race in 2010 in that same category (unless you are one of those old masters). 4s will become 3s and 3s will become 2s. That's how bike racing works. Consider yourself called out now!

We want these races to be enjoyable, fun, and challenging. With this saturdays race being held within a neighborhood setting, we are going to park at Barry School on Platte Purchase Rd. This is 1 block east of Barry Platte Park which is on Old Stagecoach Rd. There is a sidewalk directly from the South parking lot of the school to the park. Please be respectful of the neighbors and of Platte County Parks and do not park along Old Stagecoach Rd. It's that time again. Thanksgiving is over. We're all 5 pounds heavier than we were this time last week, and it's time to start thinking cross again. With only 4 more races on the local calendar we have to make each one count.

Boss Cross #4, the finale, is this Saturday 12/5 at Barry Platte Park. It's a killer venue that offers everything you want from a good cross course. Sand, rolling hills, lots of fast grass, some off camber descents, and some great paved sections. The park is really easy to get to. Take 1-69 north to the Barry Rd. Exit. Turn left and go 1/4 mile. Turn right on Old Stagecoach Rd. (signs pointing you toward park). The park is 2 blocks up on your left. Parking will be 1 block farther at Barry School. There is a sidewalk that goes straight to the park.

Registration opens at 9:00!

There are a lot of close races for the series. Remember, series winners will race for free in 2010!

BC3 in the books!

Thanks everyone for a great event yesterday. The weather was perfect, the racing was great, and the food was even good. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves on a very difficult course. Each season we need one course that wakes us up, and I think this was that race. The hills and technical sections played a major part in the results, but with many riders throwing down sub 5:00 minute laps, it couldn't have been that hard!

Race points should be up very soon, and series points are circulating and will be posted soon as well.

Next race is December 5, at a new venue called Barry Platte Park (169 and Barry Rd) on old Stagecoach Rd. Super easy to get to, and less than 10 minutes from downtown. It will offer some really cool features and test us all!

I recovered a couple items at the race:

1 Bike Shack wind vest small (actually from the 10/4 race)

1 set of Bontrager Race Lite wheels (if you know what color they are and what tires are on them they are yours).

Well, I'm shelled. I'm sure all you hardcores who raced both days are worse off than me... And you guys who raced one of the days are probably knackered too! I have to say, this was a bitchin weekend, ladies and gentlemen. You all really made the events badass... I must thank each and everyone for coming out, and I definitely have to shout out to Ted and Wes, as well as all the other volunteers, for helping out with what is a thankless job - wrangling incoming park users and course control. I know that there were some issues with people walking on the course during races. I also know that we need to work on it... however, despite this, I think the weekend was a sucess. We'll be posting results, series points, and all that crap in the next week or so, be patient.

This is going to be a staple on the calendar, gents... See you on Halloween!

Here's a map of the course for the English Landing Cyclocross Classic. We intend to run the course in reverse for day #2. I don't know which will be worse.... Although, as you all know, we may change it up a bit before Saturday.

Also, please note the parking assignments. There's a classic car show going on in farmer's market on Saturday afternoon. This means that we need to park away from the venue in the western and northernmost areas so we can respect these other park users...

Announcements - Races #1 and 2 - English Landing Cyclocross Classic

You wouldn't believe it by reading this, but writing these posts is hard. All I really need to tell you, dear racers, is that the Boss Cross 2009 series kicks off on Saturday October 3 and Sunday October 4. We're trying to keep up with all of the other awesome cross series(es?) here in KC who have definitely raised the bar in terms of venue, production, amenities, and all that crap. I need to admit... I'm a pretty busy fellow (as everyone who takes a minute out of training, working, trying to be a good parent/spouse/student is as well), but what I may be that none of the rest of you are is super lazy. I'm also slower in life than I am on the bike.

How this affects you racers is that race information gets disseminated at a snail's pace and at the last minute. I'm usually sitting in a hotel bar after a bike ride tweaking the flyer or course maps or figuring out who's doing what when between gin and tonics and beers... Tired from a ride and half boozy from the drinks, I'm trying to get it right, really, but I can only focus for a short time...

So, as you have noticed, the general series flyer has been posted for a week or two. You can see venues, dates, categories (with new start times this year!), and prize lists... all the formal crap. But what I've been struggling to get out is information about Boss Cross #1 and #2 on Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4. We've put together a big prize list for this weekend kickoff - $1,000 for each day in cash and tons of bitchin prizes from TRP Brakes, Maxxis Tires, Cycle City, Boulevard Beer and others. We've also added a separate singlespeed category... Parkville has been really cool about welcoming us back into English Landing Park for the third year - even after last year's mudfest. We're changing up the course a bit - no a lot - and trying to make it harder... The goal is to make this weekend of Boss Crossin' a staple on the calendar... I'm even going to really far in to douche territory by naming it - English Landing Cyclocross Classic... Hopefully you all will help make this race a classic!

One last thing... I know that this is Octoginta weekend. And this sucks. Really. I've always maintained that cyclocross season should start the weekend after Octoginta, and you longtime BC'ers may remember that the series was the three weekends after Octoginta... Well, I now think that cyclocross is a season unto itself and we should be able to race as much cross as the guys who want to can... and while lots of crossers race on the road (or the trails for that matter), lots of us make cross our season. Other series(es) have recognized this and added dates in September (the KC Cup at Swope Park was bitchin!!), which has really helped the cross scene grow and lets CX'ers maximize the racing we can do here in KC... We're going to have four months of racing... awesome. So, if you're a guy who does race on the road, and does the Octoginta TT, go do it... then come race in the afternoon at Boss Cross - this is going to be a great weekend!

On another note, Kansas City has definitely earned a spot on the cycling map this year. Tons of good shit happened: Tour of Missouri, Cross Nationals, Chris Wallace, a huge expansion in local cross series... This may be the best year ever for cycling in this town. Some of you may disagree, and it probably is debatable, but the last three (three!!) months have been stellar.

Boss Cross has been ok too, I think. We have seen a ton of new people at our races, and it's great. The venues and courses have been awesome, thanks to the weather in November. Now, here's the last one of the year. If you remember last year's race, I think it was held around the same time, definitely similar weather. Wet, muddy, coldish. Some people may think that this is going to be an easy race... well, there's not a monster hill at English Landing, but we're still going to kick your teeth in. Come out, have fun.

Public Service Announcement - KC NATS COURSE CLOSED FOR PRE-RIDE

Dudes,

Because the weather is going to turn nasty, KLM has requested that we help spread the word and let y'all know that there is NO PRE-RIDING on the Nationals course. We've been out there helping with setup and all that, and everyone has done a lot of hard work getting the course cherry for Thursday. So, we would like to avoid any damage to the course (tape, stakes, etc) before the racing starts... So, here's the official word:

Spread the word to your teammates and post on your websites that due to the rain and snow that we are getting the KCCX Course will be closed all day Tuesday and most of Wednesday to preserve the course. We want to minimize any pre-race damages to the turf and course equipment such as fence posts, barrier tape etc. We will make a decision on Wednesday whether or not we will allow any pre-riding before Thursday. Thanks in advance.

Boss Cross #2 - Kick your fam out early

Here it is, y'all. First a couple of things. One, I'm a computer retard. I really don't know how to do much online except what's required of me at work. Secondly, I'm a computer recluse. There is a distinct disconnect between my generation and the one that seems to dominate these blogs and forums and all that other crap. I don't know if it's because I'm pretty satisfied with my real life (other than being fat, out of shape, slow, and out of town for weeks on end) that I don't feel compelled to sit on all these websites, forums, bulletin boards and blogs and post my mundane stuff. Maybe I don't think that I'm interesting enough, or there are others that are interested enough in what I do on a day to day basis to fill up the interweb with more drivel. Maybe kids these days are so hyper-connected to a larger community, one where the boundaries are limited by bandwidth rather than riding distance that it's second nature to live part of their lives on the internets. Anyway, it's been awhile since I've posted anything.

Now we have something to post: This Sunday, November 30, is Boss Cross #2. It's at Platte Ridge Park in Platte City. It's going to be a similar course to last year, and if you were there last year then you know it's hard. You have to have legs and lungs, but, kids, you also must have skills. We've heard from several this year that the courses are not technical enough, whatever that means... I guess if I feel egotistical enough, I can take a bit of blame for that...

See, when most of us who have been racing for more than 4 years started out, there were maybe 9 cross races a year. The season started generally the first weekend of November and went to late January, usually 3 races a month. There was Slimen Und Grossen at this sweet little mudhole park in western Shawnee - there were three races here, two and sometimes three races at Big Shunga (I think) in Topeka and if we were lucky, maybe a race or two at the river trails in Lawrence. Every once in a while someone else would come along and put on a random race. The Topeka races were badass - grassy, paved, hilly. The river trail races were what you would expect (Ian Kirby bunnyhopping huge logs) - a long section of the river trails with a section coming back on the levee with some goathead thorns in the field between the trail and the levee if you were lucky. And there there were the S&G races.

As I look back, I can't say that I fully appreciated these races or this venue. A big race was 50 people, we usually lined up in the rain, and we always had a bitchin raffle for prizes rather than the winners taking home all the good shit. The park (or land) was small. Really small. And it was always muddy, like ankle deep mud for the entire course, and I don't remember the grass ever being mowed... There was a short section that went up a short stiff climb; near there, really part of the same landscape feature, but in a wooded area, there was a wicked muddy rutted right hand turn around a tree, up a step directly down into steep white knuckle descent into a left hand turn onto crumbling asphalt. There were some other things, but what you need to take away from this, is this: due to the mud, a small venue, and the always crappy weather, we learned to ride our bikes well, I think really well. Also, the race speeds were pretty slow... yeah, Tilford was fast, but the Bs where I lined up... we were slow, not because we weren't strong (I was 10 years younger, single, skinny... we all were), but because riding a course in deep-ass mud is slow!

In the caveman days of the internet, we (or at least I) didn't have youtube type videos of the euros... I had a couple of WCP videos of CX worlds, and some races that were taped in the 80s, and pictures in magazines. Seeing the courses that the Euros were riding did something to me. Yeah, there were muddy sections (really muddy) and there were steep descents and runs (I was a mountain bike racer, I could handle those), but there was also A LOT of wide open paved sections, and a lot of fast flats, and these guys hauled ASS. AND, they started racing at the end of September. These course elements were things that we didn't have a lot of here in KC, mostly based on venue availability... but, it looked like these races were grass crits, with some hard shit thrown in, rather than the hard races with some flats thrown in if the park had it to give... So, I thought that we could lengthen the season and bring some of these 'Euro' elements to our scene with a new series, Boss Cross. We started doing free show-and-go races in downtown KC parks, and these featured a lot of pavement and flat sections, lots of grass as well as a lot of really hard technical features (stairs at Gillham Park?). We moved cyclocross from the Slimen Und Grossen era into something like what we have now... And my hat is off to Mark, Joel, and Curt for all those races, that was truly the stuff of legends.

So, what we have now, is a lot of grass, lots of pavement, lots of speed and a couple of barriers thrown in and some off camber stuff. Partly this is due to federation rules, but at least for my part, it was because that is what I wanted to see in a race. I wanted to watch fast guys go fast. And today's races are still hard - I still can't figure out how to get around that weird right hander into the stairs at HPT... And all the guys racing now are fast. Now we need some hairy technical stuff... Like it used to be. With all this said, Boss Cross #2 is going to require you to bring your A game. You will have to negotiate steep climbs, corners, hairy descents... You're going to have to get off your bike and run some of that turkey off. And, you will still be able to put it in the big chainring, if you have one. But, it's time to start working on the handling, kids.

Boss Cross Numero uno!

Folks it's almost that time! Boss Cross #1 is just 2 days away. The course is sweet and dialed, and the weather will be spring like. The race is at Tiffany Springs Park. 1/2 mile north of 1-52 on Hampton Rd. If you have questions on directions call myself (Joe 816-820-0366), or Jeremy (816-695-8608).
Registration will begin at 9:00 am with the first race at 10:15 with the Women and Juniors lining up. We've got some great prizes lined up and healthy payout for women open, men open and 3/4.
This will be the same course as Nationals in December, obviously some sections are open for change, but plan on coming back in December.

All the races have experienced a larger turnout this year... This is good, right? More racers equals more competition... If you're me, then it means more people kicking your ass, but if you race in the Women's categories, or as a junior, this also means that you are racing earlier. You now race at 10:15. Sorry to make you wake up earlier, but I need my beauty rest (and so do those hideous 3/4 dudes)... I know that the master's have been up since 4:00 am, but, that's the way it goes.

Welcome to the Boss Cross blog. This is the best source for information on the 2008 Boss Cross Cyclocross Series. We will be posting venues, course maps, and other assorted stuff to keep all of you up to date on the developments for this season.

Quickly, BC08 will be presenting two new venues this year:

11/01/08 - Tiffany Springs Park, Kansas City, MO (Home of the Boss Cross Short Track Cross Country Mountain Bike Series - If you missed this one, you're lame)

11/28/08 - Platte Hills Park, Platte City, MO - New portion of the park we debuted last year

12/28/08 - English Landing Park, Parkville, MO - Pretty much the same bitchin course as last year
